Every so often, well, ALL the time in the music community, certain artists do something a little different and turn the world on its ears. Madonna did it with her orvert sexuality and almost bluesy vocals. Others followed. Nirvana busted through with a dirty, semi personally degrading lyrical style matched with an even 'grungier' music behind and around those tortured lyrics. Others followed. Pantera pummeled us with a barrage of groove and amazing guitar noises, topped off with a singer who was the equivalent of a ragging bull both on record and stage. Others followed. Bands like Misery Signals and For the Fallen Dreams (and Legend) added melody to muscular and meaty hardcore barks and breakdowns. Many followed. Many failed, miserably. Others stood out and made a familiar style all their own. Enter Findlay, Ohio's new sons, The Plot In You.
This band, originally dubbed VESSELS was merely a side project for guitarist/vocalist Landon Tewers of Before Their Eyes. After releasing an ep, Wife Beater and ultimately re-releasing it, adding a new song which showed the bands new musical direction as well as new name. Around this time Tewers also left Before Their Eyes to pursue this newer and better musical project. Bypassing the straight up aggression of Wife Beater, the band added more melody and clean vocals that arent the normal, im wearing my little sisters too tight stretchy pants, high pitched nasally annoyances. They actually get stuck in your mind and you find yourself throughout the day humming them. The muscular hardcore/metal core breakdowns are still prevailant, just not as redundant as alot of wanna-be's out there put out for us to consume.
The vocal attack between Tewers and Anthony Thoma make the vocals not one dimentional either as they play off each other well. The lyrical content is without a doubt some of the most genuinely pissed off if ive heard in a while. Its not quite the bile spewing tales of deathcore but the brutally honest words that anyone thats ever been truely pissed off has written down, thought or in some cases, actually said aloud! Lyrics like;
"You mother fucker I hope you burn in hell I hope you know what you've caused me You are the one that's ruined me"
from Small Face, re recorded for inclusion on First Born, kinda say it all. Theres no double meaning here, what you hear is what you get. The soul is barred here, almost ala old Korn when Jonathan Davis actually wrote things worth listening to, Landon threatens in one track to 'tear your mouth of your fucking face' as we get the pleasure of hearing the band destroy and attack our senses. In a good way. The cd even starts us off in the right direction with a poor woman gently crying as we hear the phone ring. A man answers and she informs him that she is pregnant. A very irate 'NO!' is bellowed. Not in disblief, more of a pissed off opening lyric, which starts the band tearing us down. If this is the new breed of music that will be wrecking us for years to come, then by God lets have it. Theres worse bands out there that could be getting copied. Rise Records manages to find and introduce some of the best original sounding bands weve heard in years. American Me. For The Fallen Dreams. Legend. Applause.
Every so often bands like Misery Signals and For The Fallen Dreams do something a little different to he music we already know and love. Others follow. The Plot In You have taken that particular style, and made it fresh again. Made it interesting and real. They kick your ass and while your down? They bludgeon you some more. You smile. The Plot In You. Follow.
